GOVERNMENT OF CANADA INVESTS IN COMMUNITY ENVIRONMENTAL PROJECTS IN THE GASPÉSIE AND THE MAGDALEN ISLANDS
08-06-2010
“This government is committed to addressing the environmental priorities of Canadians,” said Minister Prentice. “We are proud to support community groups across the country willing to take concrete action through on-the-ground environmental projects that will achieve a more sustainable Canada. Their actions, large or small, will help to protect the abundance and variety of life that is part of our natural heritage.”
In particular, Environment Canada has contributed to enhancing the natural environment project on the Magdalen Islands; the proponent of this project is the Comité ZIP des Îles-de-la-Madeleine. The aim of this project is to clean up some ten sites, and it is expected to collect ten tonnes of waste. In addition, a local awareness campaign will be conducted to avoid the appearance of other illegal sites.
“Our environment is an invaluable treasure and its preservation is a collective responsibility. It is essential that residents on the Islands be made aware of the importance of conserving these areas for the well-being of current and future generations,” said Mr. Anatole Chiasson, President of the Comité ZIP des Îles-de-la-Madeleine.
The EcoAction Community Funding Program is a Government of Canada initiative that supports projects that rehabilitate, protect or enhance the natural environment, and builds the capacity of communities and individuals in support of a more sustainable Canada. The two projects announced today will assist locally based, non-profit organizations in initiating actions that result in cleaner air, reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, cleaner water and the protection of nature at the local community level.
